The Canterbury Tales was written during a time of significant social change in England. The feudal system was in decline, and the rigid class structures were slowly loosening. Chaucer, a diplomat and poet, was well-acquainted with different levels of society, and he used this knowledge to create a microcosm of the English social hierarchy in his work.
